Buildings
Dansekapellet is housed in the former chapel and crematorium of Bispebjerg Cemetery, originally built in 1908. The chapel was closed in 2003, after which the City of Copenhagen decided to renovate the premises and let dance take over the historic buildings. Dansekapellet officially opened its doors in 2012.

Transformation of the courtyard and development of a new open-air stage
Dansekapellet courtyard is a vibrant space for dance, performances, social gatherings, and relaxation.
The courtyard invites dancers, neighbors, and visitors to engage with the space, whether for art or community.
In phase one, supported by the Ny Carlsberg Foundation, artist Thilo Frank created a large-scale light installation inaugurated in August 2019. The artwork integrates Dansekapellet with Bispebjerg Square through a kaleidoscopic mirror effect, reflecting activity between the courtyard and the square. The built-in lighting also enhances visibility and safety in the area.
Phase two included a complete courtyard renovation with new furniture, a stage, and improved entrance facilities - supported by multiple foundations and the City of Copenhagen. The space is now activated through festivals, pop-up events, and activities focusing on dance, movement, and community.
The courtyard and stage officially opened on August 27, 2021, during the 5th subURBAN DANCE FESTIVAL with performances, talks, workshops, and a circus show. It was followed by Late Summer Sessions every Saturday in September for children and adults.
Since Dansekapellet’s founding nearly 15 years ago, it has been a dream to use the courtyard as an active, outdoor extension of our work. In a time of increasing screen time and indoor routines, the need for movement and fresh air is more important than ever.
We envision expanding both the capacity and type of activities - including more movement-based offerings at the intersection of dance, sport, and community engagement.
And we can do that - in the courtyard.
This is what Dansekapellet used to look like
